Mending Healthcare Systems In Mayuge

The Story of 'Irene'

I got a report today, that treatment is going well for Irene. Her eyes are at ease, she is eating well, her leg got its second dressing. She is taking her heart medication on time and is a different young lady all together from where we began on the 23rd of March 2023. Sincerely, and to those of Mayuge Community Development and Empowerment Organization, I cannot stop thanking you enough. That is the power we have, when we can show up for another person who desperately needs help. Tire not from doing good. It always comes back. If not for you, for your children and in turn a better world.

So why am I persistent with the story of Irene?

Irene's parents transitioned (past on) so she is all on her own.

She has not had the privilege to go to school. So, she needs a community that will make sure she has a fighting chance.

She has nothing. No land, no titles and is at the mercies and care of her neighbours who do not have the same things as you might have, let alone a decent income.

My wish is that the story of 'Irene' and how the community of Mayuge and donations from four individuals in the Netherlands can be used as a case study model that can be embraced as blueprint of how communities can be engaged in the healthcare systems. You are not an Island. And if you do not have your health, you cannot provide for yourself, let alone be a productive member of our society.

However, there is another underlying problem in society and that is, we have forgotten to be human. Grass does not struggle to grow where it finds good ground. This is not the case for 'some' astronomically wealthy, and members of society that eat alone and do not even dish out the very crumbs that fall on their plate back to the very society they live in. For you, history will remember you as a greedy lot. Meanwhile you the givers of society, you are the perfect example of 'there is enough for everyone is need and certainly not greed.’

What cannot wait for Mayuge

The healthcare system that accentuates a healthy life are broken. More so, broken for Mayuge in Uganda. Scores of women, children, and the elderly need help. I cannot do this on my own, neither can Mayuge Community Development and Empowerment Organization (MCDEO), nor team 'No stress’ and other well-wishers.'

I kindly beg, if not ask with every morsel of me for a dialogue with The Ministry of Health of Uganda, any health professionals and relevant stakeholders desperate to alleviate the suffering of those who need it the most, to come to the table, put their funds, time, efforts and goodwill like we have modelled with Irene and many other examples that the community of Mayuge can attest to.

I end here, as I draw the line of engagement, "there is enough for everyone's need and not enough for everyone's greed."
